Why consulting jobs are so important for data scientists

This report differs from the technical Data Science manuals. Now I look back at the period when I operated as a data science consultant for major publicity company and consider the causes why it was deserving it. I don’t fake that my views are exhaustive or universal, but I suspect that they will be valuable to those viewing a job selection or who are at the start of their career travel. Or you simply can turn to DataScience UA, if you don’t want to read this all.

To start with, I’d like to say a few sentences about myself in context. I began out as a software engineer and served in many areas of data and analytics, regularly linked to purchases and marketing. Then I chose to turn over radically to Data Science and got a master’s degree in Germany in a parallel area. I then joined a major global marketing and relations firm as a Data Science consultant, where I wasted the following 3 years in 2 diverse activity segments: marketing (media) and data science consulting.

  Why media?

In truth, there is enough info in the media, tons of info, hills of info, and the greatest thing about that info is that it’s real-globe info. That means that in every action potential it’s:

– messy,

– rare,

– unbalanced,

– cut.

99% of this information is not enough informative, but it’s true data about true human behavior. Getting 1% gold in this info is a request and permission for the inquisitive data analyst. Acting with massive numbers of badly formed data is the best path to determine how to effectively prepare data from multiple sources, in multiple arrangements, regularly in true periods.

 Why consulting?

There are 3 reasons. And they are:

  1.   Counseling prepares you to concentrate on results and take responsibility for them.

The fact is that you can improve your profession for a while if you have excellent technical talents, but after a while, soft skills begin to value, and counseling is the best position to get them.

  1.   Consulting teaches you honor.

This means that if you get difficulty with your info, base, etc., discover and suggest a resolution, not just fix the dilemma. There’s constantly a workaround you’ll like. This rule also applies to relations with co-workers. If you’d like to succeed in your consulting position, don’t pass on the difficulties you encounter to the managers you turn to, offer solutions. This seems like obvious advice, but team members constantly consider that human managers survive to determine their managers’ problems.

  1.     Choosing the correct specialization that is relevant to your local market will ensure that you will be employed for years to come.

Large consulting companies ordinarily have buyers from various activities. Consequently, there is a chance to operate on many schemes, whether it is structure a recommendation system, an algorithm for automatic entity extraction, or time series forecasting. Operating in consulting, you have an unusual chance to discover the field that fascinates you most. In addition, you learn about industry requires in your local market. In this way, you may select your prospect specialization formed not only on personal choices but additionally on the market interest in your area.

Conclusion

Glancing back over the prior few years, I am very pleased with my career choice. It’s difficult to get another business that offered so many opportunities to learn and grow. What made it particularly worthy was:

  • the entrance to virtually limitless data and support,
  • a broad range of customers and schemes,
  • an atmosphere that allows you to act on your communication skills.
