Method 3: Change The Permissions

1. From the Start button, go to the root folder by clicking File Explorer
2. On the left pane, click on ‘This PC’
3. Right click on the external hard disk drive and select the Properties option
4. Select the Security tab
5. Click the Advanced option
6. The current owner will be displayed in the pop-up window, so click the Change option
7. Then, Select the User or Group pop up box that appears.
8. If you’re the administrator, type in your current username in the search box
9. Now, click the Check Names button. Soon your name will be replaced with the system name which is official.
10. Click the OK button or hit the Enter key
    Then, you will be redirected back to the Advanced Security Settings window
11. With the text: Replace owner on subcontainers and objects a new tick box appears below the owner, select this checkbox.
12. Again Select the checkbox “Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object”
13. On the Permission entries window ensure that “everyone” appears, if not, click on the ‘Add’ option.
14. Type everyone and click the “Check Names” followed by OK.
15. Lastly, Click on Apply

Method 4: Allow Permission To Full Control

1. Right click on the file
2. Select Properties
3. Click on the Security tab
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. The current owner will appear on the popup window, so click the option ‘Change’
6. Change the Owner to your username and this requires admin access in order to change.
7. Once you are done, close the window.
8. Right click on the file again
9. Select Properties and then click on the Security tab
10. Click on the Advanced option
11. Select the Disable Inheritance followed by Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object.
12. The permissions entries which you don’t want, remove them.
13. Ensure that everyone and your user has ‘Allow permission to Full Control’.
14. Lastly, click on the OK button and soon you will be able to open the file

Method 5: To Change Privileges, Use UAC settings

1. Right-click the Start option and select the Run button
2. To load it with admin privileges, type secpol.msc
3. Soon the Local Security Policy window will appear
4. Navigate to Security Settings by going to the left pane
5. Select Local Policies and then click on the Security Options
6. On the right hand list scroll down to find the User Account Control setting
7. In Admin Approval Mode, run ‘All Administrators’
8. Double click it or right click to select the Properties
